I received an e-mail this morning from a person who was asking about the ways in which they could or should go about overcoming their stutter. So why was this man asking me such a question? Well I run a speech centre which is called The How To Stop Stuttering Centre, here in the UK. I had a stutter for eighteen years, from the ages of four and twenty-two. After a lot of hard work and desire I successfully managed to achieve fluency. This was fourteen years ago and I have been helping other people to also "stop stuttering" ever since. I help people in a variety of different ways; which option people choose widely depends on their personal circumstances such as their location. The main therapy comes in the form of an intensive one-to-one speech course. These courses are normally held over a five-day period however there are shorter two and three-day courses available. During the course I teach people what I call the "stuttering speech rules", these are basically the techniques that I used to eradicate my own stutter. I also advise on the types of practice that should be used and about the amount of practice that is required. I have also produced a number of self-help stuttering therapy options. These are for those people who, for whatever reason, are unable to attend one of the above courses. These self-help options include a seventy-minute stammering DVD, an e-book and an audio book. I provide the people who seek my help with an important continued support service. This is where they are able to keep in regular contact with me to seek additional advice and to ask any questions which may arise.
